For those of you not familiar, there are a set of rules that all men must abide by called “Man Rules.” Many of these rules you already know, such as two men shall never share an umbrella, ever, but many of them you’ve probably never even heard of. The Captain’s will be spreading these Man Rules through TCM for all to read, understand, and put into practice.
Our inaugural Man Rule is the concept of equal footing when at the bathroom.
Rule: “It is acceptable to have a conversation in the bathroom ONLY when on equal footing with another man.”
Interpretation: This is a very straightforward Man Rule. If you’re going to the bathroom, you are only obligated to have a conversation with any other man that is on your equal footing. Equal footing is described as being at the same level in the bathroom, i.e. washing hands, urinating, taking a shit, and god forbid, waiting in line.
I chose to highlight this Man Rule first because it’s an important rule to understand. I can’t tell you how many times at work I walk in to take a quick piss and the guy in the shitter is discussing legal plans with someone washing their hands. It makes for an uncomfortable bathroom experience when half the reason you want to go to the bathroom is to escape from your desk in the first place!
If you encounter such an experience, when someone that is NOT on equal footing tries to have a conversation with you in the bathroom, all you need to do is tell them “Man Rule.” If they don’t understand the rule, feel free to explain it to them, but there should be no obligation from your end. This should cut down on awkward bathroom conversations and make you feel comfortable in your element.
Remember, it is every man’s job to know and understand the Man Rules. Keep checking back for frequent updates and always remember to spread the word.
