I must admit, not too shabby on picking the LDS winners. TCM went a perfect 4 for 4 in our playoff preview. I now feel more of an expert than half of the ESPN analysts who are still hoping their bets on the Cardinals can be cashed in.
While the Yankees and Phillies were conventional picks, we showed off our sack in picking the Angels and Dodgers. Maybe we’ll open up some sort of low-end bookie service next week, or maybe Captain Flintheart will begin breastfeeding. Lord knows what will happen next, but one certainty is round 2, better known as the LCS.
American League Championship Series
The Yankees looked pretty solid in the ALDS. For the first time in years, A-Rod hit like he could and it was all due to Kate Hudson’s butt. Or maybe it was because the culture of the Yankees has finally changed after a near decade of futility (in Yankee-terms). The Twins were a good team, but not good enough for the Yankee bats. The pitching was good too, keeping the Twins in check for three games.
The Angels win was no fluke either. They manhandled the Sox. The Angels brand of baseball was just too much – taking the extra base, stealing a bag when needed, and solid defense. Maybe the Sox were just a weak team this year. Who would knew? I’m just excited that we won’t see any Riverdance moves from Papelbon this year who might be the biggest douche ever.
The Yankees vs. the Angels. Catcher manager vs. catcher manager. Power arms vs. power arms. This is an evenly matched series believe it or not. The Yankees have more power, but they play in a field that is a bit bigger than a Little League field. Starting pitching is going to be a big factor. The Yankees are bringing a 3-man rotation against the Angels 4-man rotation of studs. This can be anyone’s series, but I like the Yankees in this one. The extra home game is going to make all the difference in a series where home wins will be the norm.
TCM’s prediction: A fight to the finish, but the Yankees in 7.
National League Championship Series
The Phillies beat the Rockies when it hurt the most – in the late innings. The Phillies were definitely a beatable team, and it showed the entire series. But, good hitting in the late innings and a surprisingly dependable bullpen gave them the upper hand against the Rockies. Personally, I don’t think their record reflected how good the Rockies were this year. The Cubs, Giants, or Braves would’ve been better representatives, but the Rockies wanted it more. Enough is enough, the Phillies moved on and are one step closer to the World Series.
Everyone in the world picked the Cardinals to beat the Dodgers. Even the LA Times! But, you know what, they didn’t count on Joe Torre’s craftiness, the timely hitting of LA’s Young Guns, and the strong pitching of the bullpen. They also didn’t factor in Matt Holliday’s nuts as well. Those nuts gave the Dodgers a chance at the victory and Loretta made it happen. The Dodgers are a dangerous team that came together this season through the suspension of their would be star player, injuries to their best starting pitchers, and off seasons by their catcher and shortstop, to notch the most victories in the National League.
The Phillies and Dodgers LCS matchup is a rematch from last year’s festivities where the Phillies dominated the Dodgers. The Dodgers were beat at every facet of their game. While the Phillies went on to win the World Series, the Dodgers had a long off season thinking over and over again about this loss. With both teams being evenly stacked, give or take on hitting, pitching, and managing, the revenge issue is going to be the deciding factor in who moves on. The Dodgers just look more hungry than the Philies this year. Plus, with the Dodgers loaded roster of veterans and Joe Torre at the helm, the odds for a Dodgers victory are looking good.
TCM’s Prediction: A seesaw series, but the Dodgers in 7.
So were rooting for a Dodgers vs. Yankees World Series here at TCM. This used to be a frequent event in the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s, and 70′s, but for 30 years the rivalry has been yet to be renewed. What a rivalry it would be! Torre vs. the old team. Manny vs. his old nemesis. Old Brooklyn Dodgers vs. their old foes. It has Hollywood written all over it. Let’s see if it’s in the cards (who will be watching the rest of the series, thanks to Holliday’s nuts).
