Return of the Flint Pod

Awhile back I decided to post a list of what songs I had been listening to. The readers and the other captains seemed to enjoy it, so I’ve decided to do it again and this time include some more insight on the tracks selected. I realize their are some of you out there who could positively not give a flying fuck about what music i’m listening to. If that’s the case, this should ease your pain.

asses Return of the Flint Pod

For everyone else, here is the list:

  1. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – “Hopscotch WillieReal Emotional Trash (2008)
Malkmus oozes stoner guitar god out of his penis and this 7 minute song is no exception. One of the best modern songwriters giving us the story of a bum being “framed” for murder. Who else could pull off lines like, “The Dick  said to Willie/”You’re in the clink/so save the pity party for the county shrink/i’m sure he’ll find some profound parallels to mine”

Captain Yar’s iPod

Since none of you know us on a personal level you probably don’t care what we listen to. I don’t really give a fuck what y’all listen to, but since this is a learning environment, I’m gonna learns ya. The object of these posts is to open up your narrow minds to new music. If you already know these songs then good for you, you can hang with us. But for those who don’t, click on the links below and let your mind explode with aural passion.

To be honest the only reason I am doing this is because Captain Flintheart and Captain Polish did this, so why the hell can’t I?

Read, click link, listen, like/dislike, open downloading program, type in songs, click search, download illegally then listen at deafening levels:

  1. The Mars Volta – “Goliath” The Bedlam in Goliath
Kind of makes you want to drive/run/eat extremely fast.
  2. Flatfoot 56 – “Brotherhood” Knuckles Up
If your Irish like me, you should hopefully like this. If you like destruction like me, then you will like this. Bagpipes anyone?
  3. Bob Marley & The Wailers – “Trenchtown Rock” Live at the Roxy
I love reggae and Mr. Nesta Marley is one of my faves. This is his best rendition of Trenchtown Rock.
  4. Dispatch – “Open Up” Who Are We Living For?
A very good, relaxing song. What’s it feel like to know your gonna die?
  5. Flogging Molly – “What Made Milwaukee Famous…” Alive Behind The Green Door
If you are a drunk, this is your official theme song. No questions asked.
  6. Gang Starr – “DWYCK” Hard to Earn
I grew up listening to REAL hip-hop. This gem by Gang Starr should not be overlooked.
  7. Culture – “Lion Rock (Peel Session)” FabricLive 07
An excellent excellent reggae song. Go fetch yourself a rum drink or Red Stripe.
  8. Goldfinger – “Superman” Hang-Ups
If any of you played Tony Hawk Pro Skater religiously like this kid, you will surely remember this.
  9. Jimmy Cliff – “Vietnam” Jimmy Cliff
This reggae song is extremely catchy. You will find yourself wishing you were smoking a spliff with Mr. Cliff himself.
  10. Notorious BIG – “Gimme the Loot” Ready to Die
“I’m dangerous/Crazier than a bag of fucking angel dust/When I bust my gat motherfuckers take dirt naps/I’m all that and a dime sack/where the paper at?” Nuff said.

Check some of these out. It might give you something new to listen to. Also, if you’re into something good, send it along. We’ll post a reader-supported iPod list if we receive enough entries like them.

This Captain’s iPod

I tried really hard earlier this year to do a highlight on music, but it didn’t pick up like I would’ve liked. Along comes Captain Flintheart and suddenly music works for TCM. I liked his post on what he’s been listening to and I think this is a good way for readers to become exposed to new bands. Click on the links to listen to the songs.

Listed in no particular order is what I’ve been rocking to this fine, sexy summer:

  1. The Eels – “Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues” Daisies of the Galaxy
Very catchy tune. A plus if you remember the movie Road Trip.
  2. Beck – “E-Pro” Guero
Very chill, just like Beck. Good music to drink beer on a roof to.
  3. The Ramones – “Cretin Hop” Ramones Mania
Rush hour traffic song. I usually pop this on when I break away from the herd.
  4. Green Day – “East Jesus Nowhere” 21st Century Breakdown
Very simple song, but Green Day still rocks.
  5. The Killers – “Smile Like You Mean It” Mr. Brightside
Quality song and always pops on when I’m traveling somewhere new for some reason.
  6. The White Stripes – “Black Math” Elephant
Jack White’s guitar riff can give a man the power to run through a concrete wall.
  7. Mudhoney – “Twenty Four” Superfuzz Bigmuff
Matt Lukin is dominant on bass. Enough said.
  8. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Maps” Fever To Tell
Karen O. has a very sexy voice – no denying that.
  9. Eddie Vedder – “Far Behind” Into The Wild
Good song to play at the beginning of a road trip.
  10. Foo Fighters – “My Poor Brain” The Colour And The Shape
Opens with distortion. Can’t beat that.

Check some of these out. It might give you something new to listen to. Also, if you’re into something good, send it along. We’ll post a reader-supported iPod list if we receive enough entries.
