The Red Hot Chili Peppers Are Back…Kind Of

RHCP The Red Hot Chili Peppers Are Back...Kind Of

Last year, I reported on long time Chili Pepper guitarist John Frusciante’s departure and his subsequent replacement (and one time protege) Josh Kilinghoffer. The first single by the band has arrived with an album, I’m With You due out August 30. The song is called “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” and it’s not the triumphant return many had hoped for. It’s more of a Red Hot Chili Peppers lite (less calories but certainly less flavor) but by no means bad, just a little…disappointing.

Klinghoffer uses RHCP’s previous sound and adds his subtle textured guitar playing to take things in a slightly new version of their radio ready “funk”. The chorus while catchy, is a bit too stadium rock for this Captain’s ears. The backing vocals could also us a good boost in the mix as well.

I’ll admit, I’m moderately nervous about this new RHCP incarnation. The golden era of the band is over but i’m hoping the new blood will give this band the much needed kick in the ass it needs.

The Strokes Are Back…Finally

About a year ago TCM reported that The Strokes had returned to the studio for the first time in 5 years ago to begin work on the follow up album to 2006′s, First Impressions Of Earth.  Music from those sessions are finally being heard on the band’s first single, “Under Cover Of Darkness”.

The new album, Angles is due out March 22. It’s like having an old drinking buddy miraculously show up again.

I’m pretty sure this album cover should either be on the front of a trapper keeper or it’s an artist interpretation of a level from the Nintendo game Marble Madness.

The Relics, Your New Favorite Band

Relics The Relics, Your New Favorite Band

The 1960′s are alive and well on The Relics‘ new album, Dead Flowers. The Albany, NY band’s debut shows a promising young ensemble simultaneously indebted to the bands that came before and pulling it into their own cohesive sound. 12 string guitars jangle, tambourines crash as bouncy circus organs swirl into a kaleidoscope of dark hypnotic pop music. Led by lead singer/songwriter and rhythm guitar player Kevin Gadani, The Relics make their way through ten songs over the course of the album ranging from garage rock, demented surf rock, dirges, the softer side of Kurt Cobain’s guitar riffing, backing vocals inspired by classic girl groups, folk rock and the Beatles filtered through 80′s indie rock. These songs all seem to take place in the darkest midnight of a Saturday or else the Sunday morning after when both body and spirit are broken.

The band’s secret weapon is Nick O’Brien whose 12 string guitar playing reminds me a of a young Peter Buck from R.E.M. O’Brien also plays keyboards on the album and sings backing vocals. The Relics are rounded out by the tight melodic bass playing (and sweet ass voice) of Jason Kendall as well as Jeff Dallas’ empathetic crisp drumming.

What the band excels in is songs…catchy, melodic songs.  In a parallel universe (or 1965) these songs would have been all over the radio. “Some Velvet Sunday” channels the burnt out melancholy of the Velvet Underground’s self titled 3rd album. “Outta Yer $$” opens with shimmering 12 string guitar evoking vintage Byrds before settling into a country twang that showcases the band’s previous incarnation as The Wild Mountain Underground. The song, “Hey Caroline” feels like it wouldn’t be out of place on a hip 1990′s indie television show. To me though, the band’s quintessential song is “Wild Flowers”, it pulls all parts of their musical base into a chugging, swampy brooding nightmare of a pop song.

Don’t bother spending your time leafing through the vinyl stores hunting for those 60′s pop bands that time forgot, because The Relics are still here playing live and making music.

You can purchase Dead Flowers by going here.

If you live in the capitol region The Relics will be playing (tracks from the album as well as unrecorded songs) all over this summer:

Candy Hearts, NYC’s Sweetest Valentine

New York City band, Candy Hearts returns with their 2nd full length album, Ripped Up Jeans And Silly Dreams. The down home suburban sunshine of their first album is filtered through a glorious wall of distortion and a full bodied band sound that helps to flesh out their tight knit power pop constructions.

9 Candy Hearts, NYCs Sweetest Valentine

Lead singer, Mariel Loveland posses a voice that cuts deep into everyone’s perpetual 16 year old self, imperfect but honest. The band who carries on in the Matthew Sweet/Teenage Fanclub tradition, reminds me of the latter day era of the Replacements. With songs that contain a strange realness to them, snapshots of life on the road and the big city, merged with a band trying to harness all it’s electricity into 2 minutes.

Recommended listening:

  • “What I Want” – The entire vibe of the album is boiled down to the album opener with smart, focused and joyous hooks.

  • “Punk Songs” – A ridiculously catchy acoustic riff that wouldn’t sound out of place on Nirvana’s Incesticide, this 1:11 track is exuberant and perfect.

You will find these songs worming their way into your subconscious for the next few weeks, so get use to it.

Another Beatles Post

I don’t think it gets much sweeter than this. What we have here is a breakdown of every Beatles song recorded and released in chronological order. It shows the authorship of the song but also the degree of which it was collaborated on.

This is legitimately fascinating.

The Oversaturation Of Christmas Music

This is a brief follow up to my previous post about how Holidays are now being pushed on us so incredibly early. There’s something I noticed this year that is beyond ridiculous. A local oldies radio station where I live, at one time played Buddy Holly and the Beatles and now plays Billy Joel and REO Speedwagon (but that’s a whole other post) and during the holiday season they play exclusively Christmas music, 24 hours a day. This use to commence on midnight on Thanksgiving, so virtually for all of December. Last year it started on Veteran’s day. This year it was the first week of November.

Basically, we now have 2 full months of Christmas music on this station. If you can’t see what’s wrong with that you’re insane. I mean, I actually like some Christmas music but this is just serious overkill.

I wonder if they do this bullshit in the UK?

Return of the Flint Pod

Awhile back I decided to post a list of what songs I had been listening to. The readers and the other captains seemed to enjoy it, so I’ve decided to do it again and this time include some more insight on the tracks selected. I realize their are some of you out there who could positively not give a flying fuck about what music i’m listening to. If that’s the case, this should ease your pain.

asses Return of the Flint Pod

For everyone else, here is the list:

  1. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – “Hopscotch WillieReal Emotional Trash (2008)
Malkmus oozes stoner guitar god out of his penis and this 7 minute song is no exception. One of the best modern songwriters giving us the story of a bum being “framed” for murder. Who else could pull off lines like, “The Dick  said to Willie/”You’re in the clink/so save the pity party for the county shrink/i’m sure he’ll find some profound parallels to mine”

Green Day’s Thievery

green day Green Days Thievery

The Green Day album, Dookie was a cornerstone of my youth experience. Everyone I know owned it. I use to love every song on the album. I still own it and i’m not sure if I legitimately still like some of the songs or if it’s based solely on nostalgic feelings. Either way, I never followed their career with much zeal after that album. I’m especially not buying their new status as aging rock opera art damaged bullshitters.

Anyway, driving home the other day I heard their song “Warning” on the radio. I hadn’t heard it since it came out about a decade ago. I didn’t care for it than and I sure as hell didn’t care for it now, yet it seemed somehow oddly familiar to me. I realized this was because it sounded identical to one my current favorite songs, “Picture Book” by the Kinks from their 1968 album, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (I know, ridiculous title. But they are British and it was the 1960′s). Now i’m not a musician, so I can’t tell you if the cords are exactly the same. But they sound pretty similar to me.

To my knowledge this isn’t the first time they’ve done something like this. Even in 7th grade when Insomniac was released I knew the thundering riffs of “Brain Stew” we’re just a rip off of the Chicago’s 1970 song, “25 or 6 to 4″. This one isn’t as exact, but you can still hear it. Green’s day version is alot slower and “grungier”
