This Captain’s iPod

I tried really hard earlier this year to do a highlight on music, but it didn’t pick up like I would’ve liked. Along comes Captain Flintheart and suddenly music works for TCM. I liked his post on what he’s been listening to and I think this is a good way for readers to become exposed to new bands. Click on the links to listen to the songs.

Listed in no particular order is what I’ve been rocking to this fine, sexy summer:

  1. The Eels – “Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues” Daisies of the Galaxy
Very catchy tune. A plus if you remember the movie Road Trip.
  2. Beck – “E-Pro” Guero
Very chill, just like Beck. Good music to drink beer on a roof to.
  3. The Ramones – “Cretin Hop” Ramones Mania
Rush hour traffic song. I usually pop this on when I break away from the herd.
  4. Green Day – “East Jesus Nowhere” 21st Century Breakdown
Very simple song, but Green Day still rocks.
  5. The Killers – “Smile Like You Mean It” Mr. Brightside
Quality song and always pops on when I’m traveling somewhere new for some reason.
  6. The White Stripes – “Black Math” Elephant
Jack White’s guitar riff can give a man the power to run through a concrete wall.
  7. Mudhoney – “Twenty Four” Superfuzz Bigmuff
Matt Lukin is dominant on bass. Enough said.
  8. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Maps” Fever To Tell
Karen O. has a very sexy voice – no denying that.
  9. Eddie Vedder – “Far Behind” Into The Wild
Good song to play at the beginning of a road trip.
  10. Foo Fighters – “My Poor Brain” The Colour And The Shape
Opens with distortion. Can’t beat that.

Check some of these out. It might give you something new to listen to. Also, if you’re into something good, send it along. We’ll post a reader-supported iPod list if we receive enough entries.

What The Fuck Is He Singing?

TCM has an appreciation for the fine arts…especially pornography and music. Have you ever heard a song and asked yourself, “What the fuck is this man singing? I can’t understand a goddamn thing coming out of his mouth”. With Van Morrison this is an everyday occurrence. The man shouts like the crazy drunken Irishmen that he is, yet it somehow sounds cool in the process. Hell, I’d even pay money to listen to him not just yell to me, but at me as well.

vmorrison 1 What The Fuck Is He Singing?

The lyrics in question are from a duet with Van and (the musical group) The Band, From the Band’s 1971 album, Cahoots called “4% Of Pantomime”. I’ve tried for years to figure our what the fuck he is saying.

Here is a full version of the song to give you some context.

If anyone wants to take a stab at this mess of drunken Irish incoherence, be my guest. Don’t Google the lyrics either, where the hell is the fun in that?

*Any suggestions for future songs are welcome too.

Childhood Songs

Remember those childhood songs you’d listen to and thought were truly awesome? The Captain’s remember may of those songs and man, they were awesome, but many of them could be foreseen as inappropriate.  What do we mean? Let’s take a stroll down memory lane.

ghostbusters Childhood SongsIn 1984, the greatest movie ever created by man, Ghostbusters, hit the theaters with a catchy theme song changing many people’s lives forever.  Forget the part of the movie where Ray Stanz gets a blowjob from a ghost while sleeping at the firehouse one night (2:00 into this clip), let’s concentrate on the song.  Ray Parker Jr. delivered the hit and snuck in a line after the solo of “busting makes me feel good.”   Well Ray, thank you for throwing it out there for us. Busting makes me feel good too.  I remember being 4 years old and all hopped up on Ecto Cooler running around the house screaming “busting makes me feel good” at the top of my lungs with no idea what it meant.

Remember the Spice Girls? About 3/5 of them we’re extremely bangable. Their break out hit “Wannabe” was probably the first instance of my life where I was exposed to the concept of being a man whore – thank you ladies.  Witness this lyric, the main chorus of the song – “If you wanna be my lover, you got to get with my friends; make it last forever, friendship never ends.”  More or less there saying in order to hook up with one of them, you must bang all of their friends. That’s incredible anyway you put it.

Of course there are many other songs we can reference here like “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “the Humpty Dance”, and  ”Pour Some Sugar on Me,” but we’d rather have our loyal readers throw out some more examples from their childhood.  I’d do some more research on the topic, but I feel the need to blast some Ray Parker at the moment.

A day late and many dollars short

15 years ago Kurt Cobain died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. This isn’t going to be one of those rants or senseless tributes paying tribute to a guy that many people never met or knew including this writer – it’s just a post to remind readers of some of the awesome music he created in his very short life.
