Recently, another epic debate has been brewing inside the offices of TCM. This time though, we need your help to determine which is the single greatest theme song to grace the opening credits of Saved By The Bell. Good Morning Miss Bliss, has been disqualified for the fact that it’s not truly Saved By The Bell and also that it is a shit sandwich the likes of which the world hasn’t seen repeated for quite some time. Same goes for Saved By The Bell: The New Class. What we do have is the oh, so classic 80′s version of the original series which may in fact define that style of show’s theme song for years to come.

On the other hand we have Saved By The Bell: The College Years, a more “rocking” theme song steeped in the early 1990′s and the transition to adulthood.

Which overtly gay theme song beats out the other? Let us know.
Thanks to Mr. Zack for stirring up the beginnings of this debate in a soccer article.

I think it is pretty obvious who the winner is and that is the original SBTB theme song. There are several reasons that this is fact, but I will only give you a few. The most obvious being the inherent absence of Mr. Belding in the college years (yes, I know he couldn’t have followed them to college). The second being the amazing animation that Brandon Tartakoff splurged for in the H.S. years opener. As for Miss Bliss and all of her awfulness, I don’t think she ever had a theme song. When they play it in reruns now, they use the H.S. SBTB theme. Another reason why it is superior. You don’t see them doulbing up on the college years theme. My last argument for why the H.S. theme is better is that even in syndication, the H.S. theme gets played in full. Rarely do they ever play the college years theme in it’s entirety. They just know it’s that terrible. H.S. years win. I rest my case.
Belding could and should have followed them to College…it happened with Feeney on Boy Meets World.
I mean i’m all for nostalgic original theme song BUT MY CHOICE is for the song on NEW CLASS and here is WHY……..THE DRUM intro is absolutely SICK!!!! and it really throws in CIRCA ’95 in a strangely good way. The lyrics are also very DEEP and meaningful ex. “Im staring at the edge of tomorrow….MORRROW!!!!!!” O yeah it’s like they can see there future but it ain’t there just yet maaaaaaan. In regards to overall quality, the college years as a show, It was comparable to an abortion.
“HEY are you MARIO LOPEZ??” “no maam but I get that a lot” SUre mario sure, it isn’t obvious by your retarded roided out muscles and pefectly quaffed hair that still has that jerry curl drip to it, that you are SLATER. OK buddy then show me ur green card LOPEZ!
@ Mr. ZACK @ FLINTHEART @ NORA Now what is your opinion on TORRIE, the leather wearing dude-chick who replaced kelly?? I think she is the reason they ended the series, and does anyone know where kelly suddenly went???
after downing a case of keystone lights, i still stand by my conclusion that the best opening theme is the rockin COLLEGE YEARS theme song. it inspires hope, and Bob Golic is a suitable replacement as the authority figure to the cast. “Beldo” or Richard “The Big Bopper” Belding, was starting to lose his grasp on the strict discipline he was trying to guide the kids with. no idea where kelly went, though she eventually moved to beverly hills and fucked luke perry or some shit. what the fuck was in screech’s spaghetti sauce?? that’s the real mystery.
Personally, I enjoy the Torrie years. It’s not as good as the “classic” run, but it’s certainly better than the College Years. Torrie was definitely a dyke.
The actresses that played Kelly and Jesse held out for more money after the first half the Senior Year season, instead of playing ball with them NBC hired a new cast member (Torrie) to replace them. They filmed the graduation episode ahead of time with Kelly and Jesse. When NBC showed the senior year episodes they would show a Kelly/Jesse episode followed by a Torrie episode. Apparently, you were led to believe that whenever Torrie was around, Kelly and Jesse were just “off camera” somewhere.
Dear God, don’t even get me started on Tori. She is an unfortunate blind spot in the eyes of SBTB writers. First of all, Tori is incredibly judgemental towards just abotu everyone that attends Bayside (most particularly Ginger). Second, Zack would never date such an obvious lesbian (FYI, the actress Leanna Creel is actually a lesbian). I’m pretty sure that Zack was just in it for what must have been some very kinky sex. Lastly, Tori has no common sense. Why is she wearing a leather jacket in a climate that is consistently muggy and sunny. She’s a moron and she needs to invest in a couple of tank tops. What actually happened was the series had finished filming and the execs at NBC decided that they wanted to punch out another dozen episodes. Tiffani (nee Amber) Theissen and Elizabeth Berkely had decided that they didn’t want to film SBTB anymore. So the geniuses over at NBC decided to film 12 more episodes with a new character (enter Tori). When they originally aired the shows, they aired a Kelly/Jessie episode one week and a Tori episode the next. This is suppose to lend to the idea that these events are happening congruent to each other. Apparently the rest of the gang was just spliting it’s time between the two groups of girls. Also, Lisa has a completely different hair style, but nobody mentions that. Just like nobody mentions that after Miss Bliss, Zack, Lisa, Screech and Mr. Belding all moved from Indiana (where Miss Bliss took place) to California. What the hell NBC, what the hell?
Let’s not be ungrateful. If NBC hadn’t decide to inexplicably move the supporting cast along with Zach and his inconsistently depicted parents, the show would have never been what it is. And let us not cast doubt as to the wardrobe logistics of a girl whose boyfriend can freeze time itself with a gesture of his hand. Plus, the executives were clearly hammering a lot of obvious points home. She was a biker, and as has pointed out, clearly a dyke. She needed a leather jacket by TV logic, just like how they thought they had to add on a pair of glasses and high-riding pants” in order to make Violet look ugly, when Tori Spelling was already way ahead of them. They could have put Tori in a ballerina outfit with a dick in her mouth, and the kids at home would have still known she was a big ol’ lesbian.
Anyway, the original song is better… I especially like the little bits right before and after commercials.
The College Years theme, by far.
The sound is far more updated, it sounds more adult and sophisticated, and the lyrics are far more mature.
